Often when we have newly installed Office 2016 and do the setup, by default certain applications get installed automatically. This is absolutely unnecessary, yet we have to deal with it. In order to get rid of it, you can customize the installation with the help of configuration file and Office Deployment Tool. Microsoft now uses click-to-run method for shipping Office 2016. The MSI installer procedure is no longer in use. In the click-to-run method, the setup program is used to download the files for installation but even data carriers that are local can also be used instead for the same purpose.
How does click-to-run method differ?
The click-to-run method does not give permission to the user to choose selectively the applications that they want at the beginning of installation. Therefore, to the rescue is the availability of Office Deployment Tool that enables the user to make necessary customization as they want. All one needs to do is to download an .exe file. After that the file is run on the computer by opening up all the contents in a particular drive of your choice. Now, if this seems too much work for you and you want to avoid the UAC prompt as well, simply unpack the contents of the file with 7-zip.
Functioning of ODT
ODT or Office Deployment Tool contains three files which you can use for modifying the installation. For that, you can either setup your own configuration or edit the already given one. Make sure to click on the Add node option located below Configuration. Through this you can understand which version you require – 32 bit or 64.
Specifying the origin
To proceed, the configuration is now linked to Office.com/setup through Source Path. To go into the UNC path, you need to make a copy of the entire media on installation in share it instantly on a network. There are several Product in the list of elements which are collectively known as Office’s SKUs.
You will find the option to setup language just below Product. Also, make sure to mention the Match OS value by changing the default so that operating system and Office 2016 can have the same language.
Delete some Office applications
An element under Product decides the applications that need to be excluded. To do that, type an element and use the attribute ID to specify its name. Mostly those you want to keep are Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint etc.
ODT does more works for you for instance mentioning the channels that will require updates in future, docking certain applications under Office on the taskbar and several others.
Starting the setup
If you are satisfied with the settings of the configuration file, ODT is ready to be executed. From the downloaded files, run the setup.exe file. In a short phase all the program icons that are to be installed is displayed.
Removing applications later
In case you haven’t removed the undesired applications from the configuration file or have already ran the default setup, applications can’t be removed from Control Panel. Then, you can get rid of it by entering the program name under Exclude App which is another function of ODT.
